The use of software in medicine has advanced significantly in recent decades, a trend that is expected to accelerate. There are complex interactions in decision-making between the clinician, the service provider and the software and the health system, and each component should be regulated and managed appropriately in line with their contribution to the service being provided. Regulation of AI in healthcare requires an integrated approach to regulation, standards and the approach of professional bodies. RANZCR believes the government has an important role to play in the oversight of artificial intelligence technologies used in patient care, and advocates for strong clinical and technical involvement at each step of the way.
