As we embark on the year 2025, it is a moment of pride and reflection as RANZCR celebrates its 90th anniversary.

Founded in 1935, our College has grown from humble beginnings to become a leading institution dedicated to promoting the science and practice of radiology and radiation oncology across Australia and New Zealand. This milestone is not just a testament to our rich history but also a celebration of the remarkable achievements that have shaped medical imaging and radiation oncology.

Throughout the year, we will take a journey through the decades, highlighting significant milestones, pioneering research, and the steady commitment to quality and safety that have defined RANZCR. We acknowledge the dedication of our members, volunteers, and past office bearers, whose contributions have steered the College and the profession towards excellence.

The birth of the College

The inception of RANZCR can be traced back to a meeting held in Melbourne, Australia, in 1935. A group of radiologists recognised the need for a professional body to oversee the practice of radiology, set standards, and provide a platform for education and professional development.

Originally founded as the Radiological Society of Australasia, the organisation became the College of Radiologists in 1949 and subsequently acquired its current title, the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists, in 1990, reflecting its bicultural focus.

Early milestones and growth

In the early decades, RANZCR played a pivotal role in establishing radiology as a distinct medical specialty. It was instrumental in developing training programs, certification processes, and professional standards.

One of its earliest significant achievements was the establishment of a formal Fellowship examination in the 1940s, which remains a benchmark for professional competence to this day.

The 1950s and 1960s saw rapid advancements in medical imaging technology, such as the introduction of X-ray, ultrasound, and CT scanning. During this period, RANZCR was at the forefront of these innovations, supporting their integration into clinical practice through guidelines, training, and research initiatives. The College's commitment to education was further cemented with the launch of its Journal of Medical Imaging and Radiation Oncology (JMIRO) in 1957, which has since become a key publication in the field.

Expanding into Radiation Oncology

While initially focused on radiology, the College recognised the need for specialisation in radiation oncology as a distinct discipline. In the 1970s, RANZCR expanded its remit to include radiation oncology, establishing a dedicated Faculty to address the unique challenges and developments in this area. This expansion allowed the College to provide comprehensive support across both diagnostic and therapeutic radiology, ensuring a holistic approach to patient care.

Pioneering research and innovation

Throughout its history, RANZCR has been a champion of research and innovation. The College has consistently promoted clinical trials, research initiatives, and evidence-based practice to improve patient outcomes.

In recent decades, RANZCR has supported pioneering research in areas such as artificial intelligence and interventional radiology, positioning its members at the forefront of technological advancements.

Commitment to quality and safety

RANZCR has always been committed to promoting quality and safety in radiology and radiation oncology practice. The introduction of bodies of work such as the Practice Standards and the Accreditation of Training Sites has helped to establish robust frameworks that prioritise patient care and safety. The College has also been a strong advocate for setting guidelines and best practices that have influenced national and international policies.

Fostering collaboration and professional development

Over the years, RANZCR has fostered strong ties with national and international organisations, enabling collaboration on research, guidelines, and policy development. Its annual scientific meetings, which bring together professionals from around the world, have become a platform for knowledge sharing, innovation, and networking.

The College's dedication to education and professional development has been unwavering. From offering Fellowships and Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programs to creating online learning resources and mentorship opportunities, RANZCR has continually adapted to the changing landscape of medical education. This adaptability ensures that its members remain at the forefront of the profession, equipped with the latest knowledge and skills.

The future of RANZCR

As RANZCR looks to celebrate its 90th anniversary, it stands as a testament to almost a century of leadership, innovation, and dedication to the fields of radiology and radiation oncology. Looking ahead, the College is poised to continue in its endeavours of advancing patient care through education, research, and collaboration, embracing new technologies and challenges while staying true to its foundational principles. The next decade promises to bring new opportunities for growth and impact, as RANZCR continues to shape the future of medical imaging and radiation therapy for the benefit of patients across Australia, New Zealand, and beyond.

A huge thank you is extended to all volunteers, past and present office bearers who have steered the College and the profession well over the last 90 years. RANZCR’s significant history and its future has been, and will continue to be, shaped by our members.
