The main aim of the Area of Need (AoN) assessment process is to determine if the applicant’s suitability for a specified position is in a designated Area of Need. Areas of Need are determined by States and Territories and can be any location in which there is a lack of specialists or where there are specialist positions that remain unfilled after local recruitment efforts. This is different to the specialist recognition assessment process where you are assessed for comparability to the skills, qualifications and experience of an Australian-trained specialist. All AoN applicants will be assessed for comparability for the purposes of specialist registration and pathway to Fellowship. If an employer selects you for an Area of Need position, RANZCR will assess your suitability. You must have at least five years of accredited training or five years of clinical experience as a consultant radiologist at an accredited training site.
Information about available Area of Need positions in Australia is usually found on the websites of the State and Territory Health Departments, or from medical employment agencies.

Your AoN College assessment will be processed in conjunction with your specialist recognition assessment. This will mean that your qualifications will be checked through the ECFMG International Credentials Services (EICS).

As part of the application process you will be asked to participate in an interview, which will assist with determining if you are a suitable match for the AoN Position. The interviews are conducted at RANZCR’s Sydney office by two trained assessors and last approximately 1.5 hours.
During the assessment the assessors will ask you about your medical education, clinical radiology/radiation oncology training and experiences. You will also participate in clinical case scenarios and clinical film reading exercises. You will also have an opportunity to ask questions about the specialist recognition pathway to Fellowship.
