In Australia the Medical Board of Australia (MBA) is the registering body. The MBA accepts registration for International Medical Graduates after they have been assessed and recognised by an Australian specialist medical college and will register you in your field of specialisation. The purpose of the specialist assessment is to determine the comparability of your training, qualifications and experience with Australian trained specialists.
If you have gained your formal postgraduate radiology or radiation oncology specialist qualifications outside of Australia or New Zealand and you wish to work in Australia, you must first apply to the Australian Medical Council (AMC)
The AMC will undertake a primary source verification (PSV) of your medical qualification and all specialist qualifications attained (or the highest qualification attained) to ensure that you have obtained these qualifications. All relevant documentation and qualifications are checked through the Electronic Portfolio of International Credentials (EPIC), of the Educational Commission for the Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG).
After your PSV submission has been made to the AMC, you are able to apply directly to the College for specialist recognition. The assessment process will determine if your training, qualifications and professional experience are comparable to an Australian-trained specialist.
In Australia there is legislation (Commonwealth Health Insurance Act) which restricts International Medical Graduates from accessing Medicare benefits (Australia’s public health funding). These restrictions remain in place even after you have obtained Fellowship. The Australian Government’s Medicare Australia website can provide you with more information about the restrictions.
For the purpose of obtaining specialist medical registration, the Medical Board of Australia requires the College to undertake the following role:

The College will consider all information provided as part of the application. In addition, applicants will be required to participate in a face-to-face assessment interview with a panel of appropriately trained assessors, who will make a determination of comparability.
The determination outcome will be one of the following:
a. substantially comparable b. partially comparable c. not comparable.
Applicants who are determined by the College to be substantially comparable will require up to 12 months’ peer review in an RANZCR accredited training site
For applicants who are determined by the College to be partially comparable can be required to undergo a period of training/upskilling in a RANZCR-accredited department prior to being eligible to sit the Part/Phase 2 examinations
Applicants who have been determined by the College to be not comparable have not met the requirements of the College regarding previous training, recent specialist practice and continuing professional development, and/or would not reach comparability within 24 months of full time equivalent training. These applicants are referred to the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) for other pathways to medical registration in Australia. Applicants who achieve general medical registration, should they wish are eligible to apply for specialist training positions along with other medical graduates.

As part of the application/assessment process you will be asked to participate in an interview, which will assist with determining your level of comparability with an Australian or New Zealand trained clinical radiologist or radiation oncologist.
The interview is conducted by two Fellows of the College, both of whom are trained assessors. All applicants are required to attend an interview. The interview is a structured and thorough process that provides an opportunity for the panel to clarify the applicant’s training and subsequent experience.
Fees
Applicants pay a fee to cover the costs of processing applications and conducting assessments. An invoice will be forwarded to applicants on receipt of a complete application.
